Walter Vaes

(1882 - 1958)

The Belgian artist Walter Vaes was born in 1882 in Borghout (in the Antwerp area). During the First World War, he stayed in Veere in Zeeland. Vaes worked in an impressionistic style, specialising in still-life works.

The still-lifes featuring flowers proved especially popular and remain more common to this day. Those still-lifes with fruit are hence somewhat rarer. He painted the fruit on a plain or uni-coloured background so that the fruit seemes almost real.
