The artist Jan Boon studied under the guidance of Philip Zilken, Jacob Maris and Cornelis Koppenol. His early work mainly consists of engravings of townscapes and animals. After this period, his style became more realistic and he began to concentrate mainly on portraits, landscapes and still-life paintings.
From the early 1930s until 1960 he produced an abundance of botanic watercolours in commission of the Amsterdamsche Superfosfaatfactory, Utrecht, later known under the name Albatros. Reproductions of these watercolours were later used as illustrations in publications on the subject of gardening.
