The artist Hendrik Jan Wolter was born in Amsterdam. From 1895 until 1898 he studied in Antwerp at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schoone Kunsten. There he met Simon Maris, son of the famous the Hague painter Willem Maris. After his return, he lived in Amersfoort and eventually settled in Amsterdam. During his life he worked in England, France, Spain and Italy.
Wolter's work consists mainly of landscapes, portraits seaviews (marines) and city scenes. At first, Wolter painted in a realistic style but because of the influence of French Impressionism, his style changed and became more Impressionistic and Luminstic. He was able to catch the atmosphere of landscapes in their different seasons perfectly.
