Harm Kamerlingh Onnes

(1893 - 1985)

Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, born in Leiden, made drawings, watercolour paintings, gouaches, oil paintings and ceramics. In addition he made desings for postage stamps and stainded glass. Initially he used bright, harsh colours and had a loose touch under the influence of Van Gogh and the Luminists.
Through his friend, the architect J.J.P. Oud, Kamerlingh Onnes came into contact with the ideas of De Stijl; a group of artists of which Piet Mondriaan was a member. As from 1925 daily reality became his favorite subject and he acquired fame with his humoristic sketches of everyday life. He approached the world with a lot of humor which is very visible in his work, in particular in the ceramic sculptures that he made from 1950 onwards.
