François Gall was born in Hungary in 1912. He is known mainly for his impressionist works which he painted in the style of the first generation of French impressionists. In 1930, he received a scholarship from the Hungarian authorities to study at the Academy of Rome after which in 1936, he moved to Paris to continue his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was to remain in Paris for the rest of his life.
Gall was inspired by the Parisian urban life, which is particularly apparent in his terrace scenes. However, beautiful women were also a returning theme in his paintings. He participated in various Salon exhibitions in Paris and became well-known. In 1963 he received the Francis Smith award.
